The 10:20 Scanning System is a skill learned by Lifeguards to scan and manage their designated zone of responsibility within the swimming pool.

The Lifeguard should be able to scan their zone of supervision in 10 seconds and be close enough to get to an incident within 20 seconds.

This is known as the 10:20 System

In the Swimming pool the Lifeguard should be able to:-

  • Scan their zone of responsibility within 10 seconds (this will include scanning the Poolview Lifeguard Monitor for four or five seconds)
  • Reach a developing incident in the furthest part of this zone within 20 seconds.
